Sync for the Jobsite: Ford Work Solutions Debuts LogMeIn Remote PC Access

In-car connectivity seems to be all the rage lately with OEM automakers. First it was GM's OnStar, then Ford's Sync -- the latest of which has been revealed at this week's Consumer Electronics Show. Not to be outdone by the family mover variety, the Blue Oval's Ford Work Solutions division has its own in-car computer trick up its sleeve. Called LogMeIn, this new service works in conjunction with the Ford's Web-enabled mobile computer system and allows for business professionals to manage their operations while in the comfort of their new Ford F-150, Super Duty, E-Series or Transit Connect truck.

The heart of the system is an in-dash screen that looks like any run of the mill standard LCD navigation system. Differentiating it, though, is LogMeIn's ability to remotely access any office computer via the Internet in order to track in real time customer information, generate invoices, and view, edit and print job documents (among other tasks) -- all while on the fly. And to better facilitate all of LogMeIn's capabilities, designers made sure it was user friendly by incorporating many of the same easy to use features found on regular office systems. Things like file transfer will be included in the new service, with drag and drop, remote sound, video and mini meeting instant messaging likely due out in subsequent versions of the innovative system.

LogMeIn will be available this spring on the aforementioned Ford trucks as part of the Ford Works Solutions package and can be installed either at select Ford dealerships nationwide or directly at the factory after the truck is built. Pricing has not been announced so far.
